For these reasons I gave Wright verbal orders, Not to take any more pistols from the Freedmen, and to hold those he had taken, subject to my orders. I infer that Wright immediately wrote an elaborate statement to Head Quarters, stating my action in the matter was arbitrary, and at Conflict with the laws of the state, (with which he says he is thoroughly familiar), and I should judge that Wright's representations to Head Quarters had considerable weight, from the Communication I received dated July 5th Inst, In this, I was instructed to write to Wright, revoke the orders I had given him, and to Cease interfering with his collection of the tax on pistols, it being a state law. These instructions I literally obeyed, Subsequently, Wright received a Communication from Head Quarters (every one in town knows this, for in addition to his telling them, and showing it to them, he has had the Correspondence published in the "Advocate", here,) annulling the orders I had given him on the 4th.
