law of the land. For this reason I am hated, denounced, and threatened with violence, by a set of men here, who will never grace anything in this world unless it be the gallows.

In addition to this unpleasant situation a public enemy has made his own statement and procured an order out of the regular Military Channel, without first trying to obtain redress through the regular Military channel, and now boasts that General Swayne backs him.

I respectfully ask in view of my position here, brought about by circumstances over which I had no control, that a sufficient number of troops be sent here, say fifteen men, to secure the respect due to an Officer of the United States Army, and that authority and a file of soldiers in addition be sent to me, for the arrest of Mr. John Wright, and his escort to Montgomery: that his trial be ordered before a Military Commission; and that he may be made an example of before this turbulent community if convicted of the acts named,

I think it proper to add, that Wright is a one armed man, and that the clique to which he belongs, interfered with a lecture delivered by Judge Porter last night, on account (of course) of his political proclivities

Very Respectfully &c
