Greensboro Sept 12th 67

Major Pierce,

Today an attachment was placed in the hands of I.E. Griggs Sheriff of Hale Co to be levied as the statute proved upon the crop raised upon rented lands. The attachment is issued at the instance of one Nicoll vs. I.C. Warren.
According to the information of the sheriff the negroes have an interest in the crop as planted and cultivated.
By the law the landlord has a lien on the crop &c: for the full payment of the rent. His desire is that you may instruct him as to such a case that he may not transcend his duty by an invasion of any military orders of the department. He will to day take change of the premises and He wishes to place the Freedman who raised the crop in charge to gather and superintend the same reporting to him.
Would you advise their course or does does any military order conflict with such proceeding: In short how should you advise the resolution of such a matter?
