the person having Claus in custody to bring him back to me. He was brought back today with the enclosed letter from his Lawyer. 
I immediately placed Mr Claus in the custody of Capt Holdridge, whom you have met, until I should hear again from Head. Qrs. I wish to obey instructions fully but the civil officers have made no "requisition" for Claus since I received instructions and anticipating the treatment he would receive in jail. I have taken the liberty again reporting the circumstances of his case and the opinion of his counsel (who are natives of Greene) before voluntarily, and without the demand of the sheriff, delivering him to that officer.
