Dear Sir
James Williams letter alleging certain charges against me for which I am now called in question, came to hand the 29" ult.
For justice to Mr Williams I may say, that he was greatly misinformed in regard to the facts - or decidedly unjust in his opinion. Yet I am now surprised that one so hasty in his conclusion should fail to comprehend the higher interest of his race and the sublime principles of political economy.
The statement that I am altogether in favor of the Whites is entirely to strong an assertion for one who is decidedly unacquainted with my action as an officer of the government - and not only brands me as the common enemy of the freedman but is a direct assault upon my character as a gentleman of honor and trust - assuming as it does that I would accept an office of trust and disregard its solemn obligations.
Whatever I may utter in private or public I believe to be to the highest interest of the community in which I dwell - to the cause of truth - my state - and Country. Such a right I cherish and no man civil or military - black or white is delegated with the right or power to deprive me of it.
