Gen Swain

I am sorry to have to appeal to you but you must excuse me I volunteerd into service of the united states, in 1863 from the county of cumberland New Jersey Company I Capt Taylor 3rd Regiment Col Moore commanding. I have an honorable discharge tryed to do my duty as a soldier I preferd to be mustered out here and it was granted I thought I would try to make a living here and have faild owing to the severe drautte in the country. I sent all my means home to be kept for me by a friend whom I had lived with for several years James Newcomb of New Jersey whom I have written to often and he will not answer me & I haven't nor can obtain means to get home an I ask you if you can intersede for me or arrange it for me to get transportation home to Cumberland County New jersey The Town of Millville. I am willing when I get there and get my means to refund the government or you if you can assist an unfortunate soldier it will be a great relief to me never to be forgoten. Elwood Roberts
