Dr Sir
The aid you have been instrumental in procuring for the destitute people of my native state has given me a favorable opinion of you & it may be that it will be of some annoyance to you, I have a case which has troubled me for a short time. I will give you the facts and ask your opinion upon the case There is a freedman confined in jail in this place by virtue of a warrant for an attempt to commit a rape. He has employed me to defend him in Circuit Court for this county & gave me an order on [[strikethrough] the [[/strikethrough]] a man who has had him employed for the last (18) months. I presented my order for payment and he refuses to accept it, on account of the freed mans bad conduct & says that he owes him nothing.

My own opinion is that he thinks the freed man will be convicted & then I can make no proof on
