At the instance of Manuel and others Freedmen I wrote you last week asking your aid in procuring for Them Their portion of the crop of last year from Mr. G. A Shingleur who lives near Huntsville Ala in which letter they stated that they are entitled to one fourth of the cotton crop made on the place as per written contract. They also state (which I know to be true) that Mr. Shingleur refuses to have any settlement with them. They have been directed by Maj Mosback of the Bureau of their city to appeal to you. They are much in want as they have many children being forced to draw on their wages for this year. They are living with Mr & Mrs A Williams within four miles of their city in Ala.
