My Dear General:
Mr Bardwell reports from Mobile recommending the appointment of Dr. Gray to the superintendency at Mobile. He states the case fully, and if his showing be accepted, Dr Gray is the man for the post. The Doctor is surgeon at Dog River, and so highly esteemed by the Medical Department that he can only gain release by resigning. What I have to ask is this: If he resigns his commission to accept the superintendency of schools will you appoint him "citizen agent," at $100. a month, and help us so far in securing his services? I may add that to the judgement of Mr Bardwell, all our teachers at Mobile and vicinity agree, two of whom, of mature age, are located at Dog River, and speak with apparent intelligence. I have no personal knowledge of the Doctor, but am compelled to respect the nomination, sanctioned as it is. An early reply will oblige.
Yours Always
JR Shipherd Sec'y
