Maj General Swayne--
Dear Sir:

Mr Geo. C Player of Talladega County - Children bring
him to fort and post office - asks the loan of 50 sacks of corn, to be repaid with the present growing crop.  I know Mr. Player well, and consider him a high-minded, public-spirited, and eminently charitable gentleman.  He has a large and productive plantation, with plenty of labor partly black, and partly white. His want of corn grows out of the fact that he has been supplying bread to the needy, who could not otherwise obtain it;
aiding them, as his plan and pities are, in making provisions for themselves. I was on his plantation in March - and know whereof I speak. An old, grayheaded man. and several youths and young men, men ploughing for him and he was repaying them in bread corn, for their suffering families.
