Yours of the 21st inst. came to hand and contents noted. Cicero Smith a colored man who witnessed the assault made on Mott by the two Causey, has been before me and his depositions taken; it appears from Smiths testimony that James and Joseph Causey assaulted Mott on Saturday the 16 inst. near Tallassee, knocking him down with a gun, and while down punched him with their guns; Smith saw no pistol - thinks they had none - they inflicted a severe wound on the back of Motts head, disabled him so that he could not get on a horse; the Causeys helped on a horse - this is a very aggravated assault, but under the laws of the State the Causeys would be entitled to Bail for their appearance to the proper
