Mr. O. D. Kinsman
Supt.

Sir,
Yours of 7" inst making inquiry as to the apprenticeship of three Colored children to Daniel Wallis, Viz. Cora, James, & Mary, children of Ann Maria Wallis. I have examined the Records of Apprentices in my Office, but do not find any of the names above: but find that on the 19" January 1866, I apprenticed to Said Daniel Wallis eight Colored children who formerly belonged to him, upon proof: To Wit, Chat Wallis, a boy 7 years of age, Alice a girl 8 years, Calvin a boy 11, Willis a boy 9, Jennie a girl 7, and Jasonia a girl 4, whose fathers are dead, & their mothers unable to support them, also Isaac 11 and John 13 years of age, orphans, both parents, being dead.

These were all apprenticed as above States on the 19" day of Jany 1866 under §1215.1216, of the Code of Ala, and before the Apprentice law now in force was passed, which was on 23rd July 1866. There was no notice given to the parents only proof that they were unable to provide a support for their children: no notice was then required as you will see by Referring to Said Sections 1215.1216 of Code:

As above Stated, I do not find the names you gave as Maria's Children, but I suppose hers are apprenticed. Either she or Mr. Wallis give the names wrong.

My Recollection is that at the time these children were apprenticed (or stated by the Witnesses & Mr. Wallis)
