On Sunday, 14th inst, the most serious disturbance occurred, on the Government Street line. It is the custom [[strikethrough]] a [[/strikethrough]] for two street cars, on that day to wait for the people from the Presbyterian church on that street. Before the service was completed, a colored man named Thomas seated himself in the front car, and put his fare in the box provided for that purpose.  He was told by the driver that he could not ride, and that the instructions of the company were to unhitch and stop if a colored person attempted to ride. Thomas insisted on his right to his seat, and the driver unhitched. Upon the advice of Mayor Withers, who attended the church, he was unmolested either by the Police or others and the people walked home. After Thomas had kept his seat for over an hour he got out and the car was filled [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]] by whites.  He then again attempted to get in and was struck by a club in the hands of some white man. A crowd of colored people who had gathered about, it is said, immediately attacked the car with brick-bats, and a melee ensued. This was a short duration and ended by the colored people drawing off. Thomas, I am told, commenced haranguing his colored friends and was arrested by the Police on a charge of inciting to riotous and disorderly conduct.
