General:-
A riot occurred here last evening, while Judge Kelly was speaking. As nearly as I can ascertain, about four persons were killed - two white and two colored, and, perhaps half a dozen injured, all slightly.

The riot was undoubtedly commenced by whites. A shot was said to have been fired at the speaker's stand, and that started a general firing from the white and colored people present. Probably a hundred shots were fired, and the wonder is that there were no more lives lost. No one on the speaker's stand was injured.

There seemed to be nothing like a preconcerted intent to get up a riot; or, at least; no organization for that purpose. Immediately upon the firing, the crowd - black and white - dispersed in every direction.
