Grinnell Sheriff of Mobile is dead Recd Aug 27th/67 E&M 324 D of A 1867 Hd Qrs Dist of Alabama Montgomery Aug. 27. 1867 Respectfully returned to Bvt Maj Geo H Tracy Sub Asst Comms at Mobile, Ala. with the inquiry as to what has satisfied him, that his instructions do not contemplate nominations to vacant positions. Maj Tracy's attintion is invited to so much of letter from this office of the 7th inst as directs him to make recommendations in such cases. By order of Maj. Gen. Wager Swayne O.D. After I had first stated that there was a vacancy in the office of Sheriff of Mobile County and found that I had been deceived by erroneous information carelessly if not designedly, brought to my office by Albert Griffin to induce me to make mention of Ofcr Granger to fill the vacancy, I felt greatly annoyed and irritated. Seeing too, the pressures from various interests that suddenly developed itself to secure this office, I re examined my instructions and feand that I had been hasty in making any nominations at all. I thought that, most likely, only nominations were wanted from me when the offices were too oscure receive general attention, and
