that in the case of offices so conspicuous and desirable as this seems to be, it was not the design, as then seemed no no necessity, for me to take action in the matter. I therefore wrote this letter and withdrew my nomination.

I trust that if any other spirit than what I have stated was thought to have prompted it, this explanation may seem to correct the impression.

I now recommend Mr. J.J. Osborne of this city for consideration in connection with the subject of filling the vacancy of Sheriff of Mobile County. He is, I think quite as competent as the late incumbent to do the duties, can give the necessary bonds, can take the oath, is a man of Northern birth, perfectly loyal, has been swindled out of his property here, has been victimized by the courts, and has married and permanently settled at Mobile.
These qualifications will perhaps receive consideration in (over) 
any confusion that may result from conflicting claims, and I suggest his name.
