Chambers County Ala., [[?]] Dudleyville P.O. March 16 1867

Genl Swain
Dear Sir
A girl without father or mother was apprenticed to me by the Probate Judge of this County by the laws of Alabama; recently she has been taken off by a freedman, she herself being a freed girl; the girl was raised to her present age with me & I presume that even now regarding all the circumstances of the case she ought to live with me until the titles of apprenticeship expire. If this is the case you will oblige me by informing me of the measures to pursue to get her home; as I know where she is perhaps an order from you might affect her recovery. A reply to this letter is respectfully solicited & the course & measures you may advise shall be followed.
Very Respectfully Yours
W. A. Whitlow

P.S. Should you think it right for me to have this girl, will I be entitled to the benefit of her hire up to t he time I get her, as this freedman is using her to his profit.
