Jones Cross Roads Tallapoosa County Alabama
August 30th 1867
To the General Commanding State

General Swain Sir permit me to appeal to you for deside the case between my self and John Day the nature of the case is this I contracted with the said John Day to live with him for the year 1866 which I did he was to feed me and family and give me the fifth of the corn and cotton he made all good promises until I went there me and my two boys and one daughter worked in the farm my wife was to attend to the house buisiness and they and my wife disagreed. She left and they claimed that the contract was not complied with on my part and then begun the fuss but me and the rest of my family worked hard for the year and he would not give me nothing also kept some of my things that I carried there with me to half pay his account he had charged against me and I deny the account for it is not just it seems hard to me that a man could lose time to amount to more than his wages as there is no other way to settle the case I now appeal to you to help me and I have tried to get the said Day to settle with me greatly and he won't do I beg you to have me righted if you please the said John Day lives about 8 miles north of Toachapoka on the Dadeville and Toachapoka Road. I hope you wont think hard of me for stating the case to you in writing for I am so busey that I can't leave my Crop to appear before
