Sir
This poor old man worked hard last year (as many others have in this county and received nothing) His work was for AJ McCaskill who is insolvent gave him his note as you will see - McC's property is soon to be sold by a mortgage in favor of H M Waters the Fatherinlaw of MC - I am satisfied that if notice was given MC from your Department that the money must be paid that it would be done, without it the old man loses his labor

Many men here have treated the freedmen most shamefully and ought to be dealt with I am a Lawyer & take cases, for I do all I can for them in the court, but in our court, there is a want of power & occasionally of will to do them justice
I was a Slave holder but am proud to know that I always regarded them while slaves as human beings and since emancipated [[strikethrough]] with fairness as [[?]] in and given [[?]] [[strikethrough]] I so deal with them & want to see all others do the same. I make this communication private & confidential because there exists a prejudice against me by that class of men who have not dealt fairly with them - On account of my advocacy of their rights before the law & courts of the country
