Unofficial

Head-Quarters, District of Alabama,
OFFICE SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION,
BUREAU R., F & A L.
Montgomery, Ala., Jan 15th 1868.

Major Genl. Howard
Washington D.C.

General:
Having received the nomination for member of Congress at the hands of the union men of the Second Congressional District of Alabama, I have forwarded my resignation as Superintendent of Schools.

I entered the State with the victorious army of the Union, and have not been absent from it, nor beyond its borders on leave of absence from that hour to this. During the whole turbulent period of the past I have been connected with the Bureau. In view of this fact, and that my salary may not be stopped without a moments notice, I ask if possible, that my resignation may not take effort until the 1st prox.

Respectfully and Cordially yours
C.W. Buckley
