U.S. District Court, Northern District of Alabama,
Office of Register in Bankruptcy.
Huntsville, January 22 1868

Brevet Brig Gen Julius Hayden
US Army
Commanding Alabama.

General
I beg leave to draw your attention to the unfortunate condition of the sick poor among the colored people of this place

Dr. Fitch the surgeon in charge of the Freedmans Hospital informs me that he is instructed not to receive any more patients and that many of those poor people are sent away to the civil authorities who decline to do anything for them and that death relieves them in many cases

Knowing your humane views and great desire to do justice to all classes I beg leave to bring this fact to your notice that some action may be taken to care for those poor sufferers until at least the inclement season shall have passed

With great respect
General
J.M. Burke
