Statement of Mr. Patterson of Eufaula Ala.
The circumstances that happened are these - On the arrival of the passenger train on Friday night the 21st inst., six young ladies, citizens of Eufaula Ala, returned from a pleasure trip and took passage on the Chewalla Hotel Omnibus, with Mr. Cox, Conductor of the Train & other gentlemen. Incoming up the steep hill from the Depot the drivers of the Omnibus attached to the Howard House, being in front, and having no load, used their utmost endeavors to balk or otherwise deter the other omnibus, by stopping two or three times.
As the Chewalla Omnibus had a full load it was deemed advisable by the drivers to pass the other 'bus if practicable to prevent any more delay, from the conduct of the other drivers in stopping or otherwise trying to balk and deter them. On the attempt being made Mr. John Black & Mr. John Howard (being in the Howard omnibus) ordered the drivers of the "Chevalla" to desist, and on his not complying with their demands - they (Black & Howard)- one or both - threatened to shoot him.
