Office of Chief of Police, Mobile, Ala., Feby 19th. 1868 Bvt. Major James Gillette Sub Asst. Commissary Dr. Sir, In answer to the enquiry contained in your communication of the 3rd as to the probable amount of destitution at present prevailing among the White and Colored population of this city, I have to reply, that from the best information I can give, the number of White families destitute is at present Five Hundred, the number of blacks is one thousand. Would also state that the statistics of crime, show an increase in proportion to the amount of said destitution Very respectfully C A R Dimon Chief of Police
