Head-Quarters Sub-District of Northern Alabama,
Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands,
HUNSTVILLE, ALA., February 8th 1868.
Assistant Commissioner
Bureau Refugees F&A. Lands
Montgomery Ala.
Sir:-
Touching the Soup House contemplated. Upon consultation with the City Authorities, it is found that the Market House can be had; and that with a trifling expense it can be made an excellent place to prepare and distribute soup to the needy; and the expense of rent will be saved.
The only benevolent organization in this city, The Huntsville Board of Charity, convened last evening at my Solicitation, to devise a plan of aid and Co-operation. The members were unanimous in expressions of interest in the enterprise, and pledged themselves to pay the wages of the necessary employees for one month, and to make every effort in their power to raise sufficiently money by voluntary Contribution, to pay the wages of Employees from month to month through out the Continuance of the issue.
Upon being advised what articles and stores will be issued. I shall forward requisition for them, and use all possible haste in placing the Soup House at this Post in active operation
