Eastern Short Baldwin Co Ala

Brvt Major James Gillett USA
Sub assistant Commissioner
Mobile Ala

Sir
Inclosed pleas find a communication between Major Tracy and myself in relation to the case of Brenton who was killed by a man by the name of Bragg in this county last year.
Had Mr Brenton been protected as he requested and as I desired and requested, I have but little doubt but that his life would have been saved, and a good Union man saved to his country and family.
The case is one amongst the many evidences to my mind of the necessity of prompt action by the assistance of Military Authority, in such cases in this county. I have endeavored to do all I could for the protection of loyal citizens and all well disposed people, and it has occupied a great deal of my time and pecuniary resources to do it.
With me it has been one continued sense of settling difficulties between freedmen and others, giving out government rations Prescribing and giving medicines to the poor freedmen and others getting schools established coloured children.
