Sumter County

Before me John W Harris. an acting justice of the peace, duly commissioned and qualified, within and for the county aforesaid, this day came James A Powell, a resident citizen of said county, being to me personally well known, and made solemn oath that one George W Hayes, who had been acting as Agent of the Freedman's bureau and abandoned lands in the said County, and who, at the time of the committing of the wrong act, herein after complained of, represented himself to be such agent, did on Monday the sixteenth instant, in the city of Mobile, pretending to be and to act as such agent as aforesaid. draw from A A Voss in said city of Mobile, the sum of one thousand dollars. being part of the proceeds of a crop of cotton made by the said James A Powell and certain freedmen in his employ. in the said County of Sumter which said sum of one thousand dollars had belonged in whole or in part to the said freedmen employed as aforesaid by the said Powell, and that the said George W. Hayes did then abscond from the City of Mobile with the money aforesaid and has not by this affiant since been heard of.  That the cotton from the proceeds of which the said sum of one thousand dollars had been drawn by the said Hayes, had been shipped to the said A.A. Voss for sale for the benefit of the said Powell and the said Freedmen in his employ
