In reply to your communication of the 14th inst. respecting the claim of Miss E.S. Thompson for Service rendered as teacher of a colored School in the Sub District of Talladega. I would respectfully State that Miss Thompson opened a School at Columbiana Shelby County 1st of October 1867, and communicated that fact to me at Talladega. I immediatley forwarded her letter to Mr Buckley Supt. of Education. In reply Mr Buckley informed me that the Bureau could not pay a sallery to teachers for service rendered after 1st of Sept 1867, and to facilitate a perfect understanding I forwarded Mr Buckleys letter to Miss Thompson. A few weeks later business called me to Columbiana, and I visited Miss Thompson and hur School, and in aluding to Mr Bs. letter She exprest hur supprise and disappointment, that thare was no hopes of her receiving a Sallery from the Bureau. I encouraged hur (as did Mr Buckley) to continue her
