restoration of the property to its legal owners, it was so restored. Since which time, payment of rent by this Bureau is justly due for its occupancy as a Freedmen's School. 
With reference to the claim for rent prior to Nov. 1867, Bvt Brig. Gen'l J.B. Callis, Sub Ass't Commissioner represented to the Ass't Commissioner for Alabama, under date of Oct. 12th 1867. that "the improvements and care of the property in my judgement is a fair compensation for use of the building so far", and I am inclined to agree with him in his judgement on the Subject.
