Shepard Comdg State of Alabama Montgomery General, We the undersigned Colored citizens of Chambers County, Ala, humbly, & respectfully ask leave to return you our sincere thanks for having placed a Bureau officer within our reach; and especially one who is so universally beloved & respected as Major Hunter by white as well as colored citizens. There is none to speak illy of him but evil doers to whom he is fast becoming a source of terror. And we have frequently heard the law abiding citizens, both white & black, say that his conduct as an officer was giving universal satisfaction and hoped he would be allowed to remain amongst us; as he is always at his post & seems more than willing to give our
