The State of Alabama
Chambers County

Personally appeared before R.T. Smith Sub-Asst Commr.
Dist of Opelika B R F & A L. G W Clemons who after being
duly sworn says on oath that the following freedmen
were murdered in the neighborhood of Fredonia in said
county, to wit. Gov Fuller, in the Summer of 1865. [[Jene? Jere? Jeve?]] Noland in the Fall of 1867. Phil Askew in the month of Jany 1868. Deponent says that it is generally
believed that one John Lawrence killed Fuller and Noland, and that said Lawrence is a terror to the community in which he stays. Deponent is of opinion that it would be unsafe for any citizen to undertake to investigate these murders and other outrages committed upon Freedmen. Deponent further states that it is dangerous for Freedmen to travel through the country on ordinary business after night.
