Opelika Ala. April 8" 1868
Lieut W Sweeney
Post Agt.
Montgomery Ala.
Sir
I was informed by Mr. Connelly (late Sub Asst Comm at Eufala Ala) that there would be an Asst Sub Asst Comm appointed for the counties of Calhoun and Cleaburn. If this is true, I would like very much to have the position. I think that my extensive acquaintance in those two counties together with over two years experience as an officer in the US Army and ten months experience as clerk to the Sub Asst Comm of the Sub Dist of Opelika Ala, are sufficient to capacitate me to fill the position - I speak, I a mans having made sacrifices for the Govt entitles him to its favors, I am sure that there are but few who more justly entitled to them than I. If you can render me any assistance in getting the position refered to, I will take it - as a very great favor, for which I will ever be under many obligations to you. I can give any reference that may be requested. Very Respectfully
Your Obdt Servt
