Jackson Phillips W | Wadesboro May 11th 1868 States that on on the 1st inst as he and Abe Ratcliff was in the field to work for Clem Phillips a Miss Phillips aged about 12 yrs came into the field and was assisting in planting and as she was leaving the field some light conversation passed between him and Abe Ratcliff concerning this girl She not in hearing. That Clem Phllips told his wife that Madison had better leave the county or he might be found dead in the road. | May 13th 1868. Abe Ratcliff states that he was in the field to work as stated by Madison R and when Miss Phillips was getting over the fence that Madison said to her why dont you ask me to help you over the fence and said to Abe that he had a good mind to throw down his basket and follow her. Also that he had a good mind to see what he could do with a Miss Catharine Duffy and would only that he was afraid she might tell, but he almost knew he could do it to Miss Clem Phillips & that he intended to try her before he had got it one working for her. |
