I left the tax bills he said he would pay them though he is pretty cramped himself just now. One of his sons has had a year of surgical operations & hospital bills due to an accident but has now come out all right. And then he has had losses to take like everybody else & he [[strikethrough]] had [[/strikethrough]] and the other directors of the Bldg & Loan had to pledge all their stock to retain the confidence of the stock holders & so he is feeling the pinch too. Mr Downing lost nearly $750 he had in the Manhattan Beach bank, which failed recently, & will have to borrow money to pay his taxes, [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]] and he has a lot of taxes & not much income from all his rental property & so it goes. Everyone is feeling so poverty stricken. I counted 11 vacant stores in Market St. 3 of them though in a new building & one [[strikethrough]] tha [[/strikethrough]] in a building that is being renovated so that leaves 7 to be accounted for
