Dear folks,

Well, we have some news for a change. Events have been moving extremely rapidly recently.

Since we have been back in Urbana Jack has been developing a combination of stuffed nose and nasal drip with bronchial cough. It got so bad he couldn't sleep one whole night. Therefore we suspected an allergic condition, and Monday this week he went in for investigation at a town clinic. The doctor shot his back with various preparations. "That one on my shoulder itches," said Jack as the injections were in progress. "That was cat fur" replied the nurse. It turned out that he had really strong allergies to cat fur and dust plus a mild allergy to feathers.

Monday night I spent all evening on the phone trying to find a new home for Penelope. By 4/:00 p.m. on Tuesday a good home had been found and she was in it. Tuesday I borrowed a neighbor's vacuum cleaner [[strikethrough]]an[[//strikethrough]] and went over the house meticulously, at the same time washing curtains, rugs, and bed blankets (many hairs on) in the automatic (thank God the lady upstairs lets us use it: I had four loads at once to run). The doctor had even suggested that we move, which would be next to impossible at this time of the year. Well, the work seemed to bear fruit, for Jack had the first night in a week without completely stuffed nose and cough. Today his trouble is still better. I have been over much of the house again with the vacuum cleaner. It looks as if we'd better get a vacuum cleaner of our own to keep the dust content low enough. In addition I will put nylon stocking pieces over all the hot air vents to prevent dust from being blown in from the furnace.
