but it was late & we plugged on. Not a drop penetrated the new top. The rest of the trip, after the torrent [[strikethrough]] started [[/strikethrough]] ended, was interesting driving too: we practically had our way lit by the lightning flashes, which followed one another at extremely brief intervals. By Champaign we had outrun the storm by thirty miles & everything was dry, but [[strikethrough]] by [[/strikethrough]] it caught up with us during the night. Such rains as the former gets these days!

We saw a little of Chicago on Sunday, namely, for me, a little more of the Chicago Art Institute. A huge, rambling place; I haven't seen half yet. There is a vast amount of early American (North & South) artifacts. A rich Mrs. [[strikethrough]] Bu [[/strikethrough]] Thorne contributed the famous Thorne houses, a gallery of tiny lighted rooms (yard cubed, roughly) illustrating mostly American home decor in minute detail. 

We are now listening to a lucky acquisition: the Verdi "Requiem", traded by the Davises for Jack's old copy of "Boris Goudunov" (it is their old copy of the "Requiem"). Both parties are pleased.

This morning I gave the monster crawdad a small live worm. He tackled it with vigor and skill: snipped [[strikethrough]] cut [[/strikethrough]] off one piece at once & held onto the rest while he shoved the first part down.
