a piece of it now. So far they have not come out of the water in our sight; but they are lots bolder & no longer hide under rocks all the time the light is on. They eat any form of meat quite heartily.

Thursday nite came a bit of extra ordinary good luck. We are working looking for an old washing machine. Some friends across the street say we can install it in their basement, which has inside lines for winter. We want to get one for under $30, preferably $10-15. The best place to look is the want-ad paper put out by the local villages of "temporary housing" for students; they are currently moving out in large numbers. Well, last night we went around looking at washing machines (none under $30) & wound up buying a tall [[crossed out]] metal cab [[/crossed out]] enameled metal cabinet ($2). Then Jack wanted to investigate an ad which offered "bike, without brakes... 75¢" we went there & found a happy-go-lucky fellow. The bike, he said had just been sold, but he had a small pile on the floor of items. "Want an iron?" he asked. "No," I said, "What I want is a steam iron." "Oh, my mother sent down her old one; she hasn't seen it since my father died, want to gamble on it for $.25?" We did. Took it home & cleaned it up and rewired a little & it works fine!! A $15 iron for 25¢! I think you can appreciate our pride in that bargain.

Love,

Doris
