just arrived from Bell Laboratories. They want him for a job which would begin in the vicinity of Boston and go to N.Y. or N.J. in two years, and they offer $595 (?) a month, which is much better than he had expected from them! It's tempting, but much better to get the degree here; night school has a great mortality rater, and is not much fun. Perhaps later.

We had fun with a little construction Saturday. Our loudspeaker cabinet, a box of about 2 1/2' by 3' by 1' was completely untreated, so we got some of that adhesive-backed oilcloth (beige) and covered it; I covered our dining table with it a few weeks back after your pink tablecloth had worn out and was quite satisfied. Then we got a loosely woven cloth and covered the loudspeakers themselves in the front, Jack putting a thin wooden frame around the edge. He did most of this work. I meanwhile was working on a new cathouse. Her old one was a makeshift from a cardboard box which she had chewed pretty badly. Carl gave me some old wallboard and leftovers from his bookcase and I made her a new one. This she cannot chew through! It is about 1' x 15" x 9" with a lovely carboard awning with black stripes made by Jack (I the stripes). [strikethrough] On [/strikethrough] One side facing the room I painted ochre and glued figures of the cat and Jack and a dish of liver previously painted and cut out on here. That corner of the room really looks fine now, and cost about a dollar to fix up.

Jack's old friend Alex Leondis came down last weekend and we ate several meals with the Leondises, Alex sleeping and breakfasting with us. He will leave about Thursday. He has been showing slides of his 3 years in the Navy, in the Pacific. This week end our friends the Davises will come down from Chicago to stay with us for two days.

Penelope should be a ball player. We have been pitching her a rubber ball on a string (she stands on a chair) and her batting average is terrific. She will play this way for an hour, or as long as you have the strength. We enjoyed the article on Siamese. She is very social. We took her to the Leondises and she was at home with her dog and cat soon, terrorising the dog.

Love, Doris
