the betatron to get a significant amount of data. This unhappy man's name, it seems, was Malmberg. The same Malmberg, still working on his doctoral thesis.
Malmberg, of course, is an extreme case, but he illustrates the point. In this field, one doesn't sit down in a library and write one's thesis. One's thesis work lasts as long as it takes for one's experiment to yield significant results.
The worst thing to do is some experiment involving a temperamental, expensive, much-in-demand machine like the betatron. If you don't get the results you need, it may be six months before you get another chance to use the machine, and when you do get it, it may be out of adjustment or broken down entirely.
I have heard so many horror stories like Malmberg's that if anyone asks me to work on a betatron project I will tell him to seek someone else in spite of the appeal of working with on of the world's most powerful particle accelerators. I want my experiment to be done on equipment built and maintained solely by me, so that if it breaks down I won't have to wait for some expert to come around and repair it.
I guess that's enough for now.
Jack.
