BLACK CANYON NATIONAL MONUMENT, COLORADO
First sighted by Spanish explorers in 1765, the Gunnison River cuts its way through this stupendous gorge. Two rim roads plus a 16 mile drive through the bottom of the Canyon are tourists' attractions. There is a 3,000 foot drop to the bottom, and at some places the channel narrows to 40 feet.

Dear folks,
We tried the ascent of Sneffels yesterday after sleeping out in bags a short way from the climb. The boys went almost to the top; I was tired & went up 2/3 only. The route taken was a laborious one & not usually taken because there was too much snow but if you discount the difficulty, the view was fine. We should reach D.C. on the afternoon of the 29th.
