My practice was to lay the telescope on a reasonably solid table, [[strikethrough]] brace it [[/strikethrough]] point it towards some prominent object on the horizon, and brace it well on both sides with numerous volumes of the Encyclopedia Brittannica. (I am sure that any other encyclopedia will do as well.) Then I could fiddle with the finder without changing the way the telescope was pointed.
[[strikethrough]] Tehre [[strikethrough/]] There were two difficulties with this procedure:
(1) In a well-populated neighborhood, it left one open to being reported to the police as a peeping tom.
(2) Often, after the telescope had been securely placed in position, one found that it had somehow gotten pointed at a mass of tree branches, a stretch of blank brick wall, or something equally unrecognizable.
