Dear Mr. Blake:
I have been reading your description of the telescope's ailments with much interest. When I looked at the pictures of the mounting, it didn't look solid enough to hold a table lamp properly, not to mention a telescope. This seems, indeed, to have been the case.
Massive, brute solidity is necessary in telescope mountings. It is hard to overemphasize this. I looked at my old tripod last week end. It is pretty solid looking, with 1"x2" legs braced at several points by members of equal thickness, but it was never steady enough, even when I braced it further with wine. One must think in terms of two-by-fours, concrete, and 3" pipe fittings.
