Dear folks,

Well, school begins today. I am at the laundromat, which is full of young couples just returned from vacation that every one of the machines is going and piles of clean wet & dry or dirty dry laundry are all over the place.

We have spent the last five days here in Champaign (at least 5!) studying and doing little jobs, we washed the car inside & out one day, applying wax, oiling handles, and getting it to shining. I polished all our shoes, a big job, a first "wash" them all thoroughly with saddle soap to remove spots, then apply a pure lanolin spray to soften the leather, then give each pair small repairs, then finally polish.. for 9 pairs in all, a long job! I also washed some windows I'd never washed before, which involved scraping off paint with razor. We will paint the living room & bathroom after exams.. the landlord promised us the paint.

New Year's Eve we were invited to a party given by one of Jack's "colleagues". We and 50 or so other people, most of whom we didn't know, thronged Bill's [[strikethrough]] little [[/strikethrough]] basement apartment until wee hours, we got to know quite a few of them before it was all over. One of the nicest was a Turkish girl name Oiya, who is also an actress (college).
