the german course) and, if he fails it, to try again, or, that failing, get B in the course, which amounts to passing the proficiency. Since he is doing very well in the course (a lot of Ag. students as competitors), there is no real problem; but if he passes in ten days, no more course, of course. He wants to take the thermodynamics proficiency also this fall, & the Optics proficiency in the spring. We entertained two people last week end -- a fellow in my Russian class, Zigfrids Steinbengs (a Latvian), and Ralph Lewis, a worker for Frauenfelder. Zig is, like all the Latvians we have met, hard to talk to: he doesn't listen, and talks. I have come to the conclusion that what he expects us to do is the same, and will engage in a shouting party next time. It's too common a Latvian trait to be mere egotism. Ralph is a high-spirited, likeable fellow. He will bring his girl friend another time.

P.S. Good for you in the Rose contest!
