He is also teaching again, Physics 106 (same as last semester). That's easier than teaching a new course. He also hopes to pass one of his 3 remaining proficiencies this semester ... probably in Optics. This summer he thinks he'll review German in order to take the second semester of the grad German course in the fall. If you get B in that course you automatically pass the German proficiency exam.

I am continuing my program of Physics (107) and Calculus & Russian. All the young Physics instructors know who I am now. I have one whom Jack thinks is nice. These instructors, including Jack, share an office. Another of them is taking Russian with me. I was hoping to get the same Calculus teacher but he isn't teaching the course this time; I think my present teacher isn't too good & may shop around a bit. There are many new Russian students -- who switched sections.

Our friends the Cederstrands moved to another, distant apt. this week. Other friends, the Wieners, are taking up recorder playing. I dug out my recorder & Jack has purchased another. Mine is C-soprano, his F-alto. Soon we'll be playing duets, & then in an ensemble with the Wieners & others. A good hobby. Will probably do a bit of that this summer. The playing drives Susie, the Wieners' cat, half witless.

We began the polio shots too. Many students are taking them.

That's about all.

Love,
Doris

I did not understand some of the words. — That's the great thing about the way the Smithsonian does things here: if one has trouble, someone else gets a chance to take a crack at it. (Thanks for all the words you did transcribe perfectly!)
