Dear Sir:

A letter from you to Miss Van Lew, dated Feb. 1. and relating to Books and Teacher for the Freedmen, was by her referred to Lieut. Merrill, Bureau Supt. for this Dist., and by him referred to me as the Supt. of Freedmen's Schools for the State.

You mistake in supposing that the "Christian Commission" supplies educational facilities to the Freedmen. There are, however, various Associations at the North engaged in this work. I have corresponded with one - the "Pa. Freedmen's Relief Asso'n." - and have secured a limited supply of books, which will be immediately forwarded to ou from Petersburg. Further supplies can be had as they are needed. Where southern people will interest
