Dear Sir: You have already learned of the destruction by fire, by the hand of an incendiary I have no doubt) of the 2nd Bapt Church. Of course you will not send any additional teachers here; and I shall regard the colored teachers as discharged, by permission of Divine Providence— unless you otherwise order— except as far as possibly we may find rooms for the best of them to continue their schools. We are making every exertion to that effect, and have hope of partial success.
I must advertise you that, at present, matters look very "blue" here for the Bureau and for schools. The best informed think the stay of the military will be brief. If they leave I think the position of a "nigger teacher" will be exceedingly uninviting in Richmond. The people are
