My Dear Sir,

Excuse the liberty I take in addressing you in reference to the affairs of the 2d (Colored) Baptist Church in this city. You know, of course, what that condition is. The Brethren there have repeatedly asked me to "try to do something for them". I have succeeded in doing this much viz: to secure a subscription of $300 (which I think will become $500) payable when the basement is ready for occupancy for worship and for schools. But the church is in that condition that they cannot advance—without aid from abroad, to the extent of $1200 to $1500—and carry up the walls to their full height and put on the roof. When they have done this much they will feel quite
