of a change of purpose, a fall corps of teachers for the Ebeneezer Ch (near the Bakery) and for the Old Church (near Navy Hill) made their appearance from that society — expecting to open their schools on the old programme without reference to districts, or expense incurred, arrangements made, or their own societys declarations! Yet they were here, and that society and its dictum is a power in Richmond. The explanation of such action is, I presume, "big blunder", and nothing more. I could not send them back, it would not answer to let them follow their N.Y. programme. The best I could do was to insist that the district and graded arrangement should be maintained, and they should "fall into line" and take such classes as I might assign them. This has been done. They occupy the 3d, 7th, and 8th places counting from Miss Canedy down to Mr. Woolfolk who has the 9th place.

This matter has cost me a good deal of trouble to engineer to its present safe position. There is work enough for all of them, and by attention to it, the machinery can be made to work smoothly
