Cap. D. J Connolly Sup &c

Captain:

Your reply to Maj. Stone, saying that board can be had at $35. per month for teachers, has been referred to me. To save unnecessary delay I write to you directly.

1st To inform you, that from what I know of the financial condition of the Benevolent associations supporting teachers, none of them would undertake to maintain teachers at Burkesville at so much expense. It costs them but $20 per month in Richmond and Petersburg. They are very much straightened in their finances and are obliged to make their money go as far as possible.

2nd To inquire whether some well educated northern colored female teachers would not be entirely acceptable to the colored people of Barkerville and whether they could not rent rooms and board themselves or find a good boarding place at from $15 to $20 per month.
