Cap J.W. Sharp
Asst Sup.

Captain

I regret to be obliged to inform you, in reply to your communication of the 20th inst., that the prospect is not good for extending the educational work among the Freedman at present. You are aware that the expense of maintaining the teachers is borne by charitable associations at the north, from all these societies I learn that the work they already have in hand is as much as they will be able to carry through this year, with perhaps occasional exceptions. I am grateful for the interest you manifest in this matter and will do my utmost to secure the requisite assistance

I am Very Resp'y
Yours Truly
R.M. Manly
